01 · The work

If it’s cloth and it doesn’t fit, bring it in.

Every job starts the same way: you wear it, we pin and chalk it, and you approve the price on the ticket before a single stitch is taken.

Group fittings · weddings & events

The whole wedding party, fitted on one Saturday

Groom, groomsmen, and fathers, pinned back to back on a single morning. Book group fittings three weeks out and everyone leaves with a date, not a maybe.

Pinned first

Priced before we cut

Nothing is sewn until you have approved the chalk lines and the number on the ticket. That number does not move.

2–3 days

Standard turnaround

Hems and most repairs. In by Wednesday at 10 a.m., back Friday after 4 p.m., at no extra charge.

30 days

Free refit promise

Cloth settles. If a seam sits wrong in the first month, bring it back and we reset it, free.

03 · How a fitting goes

Twenty minutes at the mirror, then it’s ours.

Pin & chalk

You wear it, we mark it. Ten minutes at the mirror settles the fit before anything is cut.

Cut & sew

Your garment goes on the table, not into a pile. One tailor owns it from first cut to last stitch.

Press & refit

Everything leaves under a hot iron. Suits get a second fitting, because cloth settles after the first.

04 · From the fitting book

What Archer Vale says when the suit comes back.

4.9 Rated 4.9 out of 5 stars.

206 notes in the fitting book by the counter, most of them written while the iron was still warm.

D. Kowalski Archer Vale · Jun 2026
“Bought a suit off the rack for my brother’s wedding, sure it was a lost cause. They shaped the waist, set the sleeves, and had me refitted in eight days. It photographs like made-to-measure.”
Ray M. Hodgkins Corner · Mar 2026
“Five pairs of work trousers hemmed in three days, each one the same length as the last. The price on the ticket didn’t move a dollar.”
S. Okafor Archer Vale · Jan 2026
“My grandfather’s overcoat, relined and rebuttoned. They kept the original buttonholes and matched the thread by eye. It hangs better now than it does in his old photos, and they told me straight what wasn’t worth fixing.”

05 · The craft

Two tables, one press, since 1995.

Edmund Nowak apprenticed on Maxwell Street before opening Hem & Stitch in 1995, in the same storefront the shop still occupies. Thirty-one years later it runs two cutting tables and a press older than most of its customers.

Every garment is pinned and chalked on your body, priced before it is cut, and sewn start to finish by one pair of hands. Suits come back for a second fitting, because a fitting isn’t finished until the cloth hangs right off you.

07 · Fair questions

Asked at the counter, answered straight.

Do I need an appointment?

Only for suit fittings and made-to-measure. Hems, repairs, and everything else: walk in during shop hours and we will pin you at the mirror on the spot.

How long does a hem take?

Standard work is 2–3 days. If you are in by Wednesday at 10 a.m., it is ready Friday after 4 p.m. at no extra charge. Same-day is sometimes possible; ask at the counter and we will tell you honestly.

Can you work on vintage or delicate pieces?

Yes. Delicate cloth is hand-finished, and vintage work keeps as much of the original construction as possible. If a piece should not be altered, we will say so at the counter before you spend a dollar.

What should I bring to a suit fitting?

The shoes and shirt you will actually wear with it. Fit is judged from the floor up, and the right shoes change where a trouser should break. Fittings take about twenty minutes; book by calling (555) 016-3278 or below.

08 · Book a fitting

Book a fitting, or just walk in.

Fittings take about twenty minutes at the mirror. Send your name, your number, and what you are bringing, and the shop will call back within one business day with a time.
